Duran Wins Emily’s List National Rising Star Award
(March 25) – Majority Leader Crisanta Duran is the 2016 winner of the Emily’s List Rising Star Award, given annually to “an extraordinary woman serving in state or local office.”
“Words can't express how thankful I am to have the support of my family, friends, constituents, colleagues and everyone who voted for me to win this award,” Rep. Duran said. “I wouldn't be where I am without your faith in me. I look forward to continuing our journey together to advance economic security for all Coloradans and ensuring the American Dream is a reality for everyone, not just those at the top.” Emily’s List is a national organization that recruits, trains and supports pro-choice progressive women. Announcing the award this morning, Stephanie Schriock, president of Emily’s List, said, “We are deeply impressed by Crisanta Duran’s strong leadership skills, her work expanding economic opportunity for women and families, and her commitment to increasing Latino and youth political participation. Crisanta Duran is a trailblazer who consistently puts Coloradans first.”
The award won by Rep. Duran is named in honor of former Arizona Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, who was shot and severely wounded in a 2011 attack in Casas Adobes, Ariz. In a release, the organization said the Rising Star Award “honors women who demonstrate the sort of commitment to community, dedication to women and families, and determination and civility that have been the highlights of former Rep. Gabrielle Giffords’ career.”
Rep. Duran was first elected to the House in 2010. By 2014 she was chairwoman of the powerful Joint Budget Committee, and in 2015 she became the first Latina and the youngest woman in state history to be elected House Majority Leader.
The award will be presented April 12.
